The guitar in a sonorous journey from Colombia

If you are a classical guitar lover, the name Gentil Montaña will be familiar to you. In our latest episode, we invite you to discover or rediscover the work of this virtuoso Colombian master. His music is a journey through the soundscapes of this beautiful land, full of passion and virtuosity.

Gentil Montaña: A Master of the Colombian Classical Guitar

Julio Gentil Albarracín Montaña was a virtuoso Colombian guitarist and composer, recognized as one of the pioneers of the classical guitar in his country. Born in Ibagué, Colombia, on November 24, 1942, his talent and passion for music led him to become an emblematic figure of the guitar at an international level.

Beginnings and Training: From a very young age, Gentil Montaña showed a great affinity for music. He began his musical studies at the Conservatory of Tolima, where he learned to play the violin. However, it was at the age of 13 when he discovered his true vocation: the guitar. Under the tutelage of teachers such as Domingo González and Daniel Baquero, he perfected his technique and developed his own style that distinguished him.

Rise as a Concert Artist: At the age of 19, Gentil Montaña made his debut as a concert performer at the Lido Theater in Medellín. His talent and charisma led him to tour stages all over the world, performing in countries such as Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the United States and many others. His repertoire ranged from classical works to his own compositions, in which he fused elements of Colombian music with classical guitar techniques.

An Incomparable Legacy: Gentil Montaña was more than a performer. He was also an outstanding composer, leaving a valuable musical legacy. Among his most recognized works are the “Suites Colombianas”, where he captured the rhythmic and melodic richness of the traditional dances of his country. His “Doce Estudios de Pasillo” are considered a masterpiece of guitar pedagogy, and his “Sonata Canto al Amor” for two guitars is a piece of great beauty and complexity.

In this episode of Guitarras del Mundo, we talk with Diego Erley Durán, musician, engineer and founder of Guitartistica.com. Since his childhood, music has been his greatest passion, leading him to explore guitar, composition and teaching.
We talk about his career, his innovative teaching method and how his experience in other disciplines has enriched his pedagogical approach. He also shares with us his vision on musical learning, his love for nature and the influence of different genres in his life.
Don’t miss this inspiring talk with a musician who has dedicated his life to making guitar learning accessible, clear and motivating.
